Hi, everyone!
Jet and I made it past all of the rivers on the west/northwest side of the island.
We took a few detours and I've been moving kind of slowly.
So, I think someone could reasonably make the journey in about four days.
We could shorten it if we can put some nice sturdy logs down across the river branches near the hotel.
I think that could really help in making it easier to get down to the base from this side of the island.

No animal attacks! :)
But we might have just got lucky.
We did hear some weird stuff going on the day before yesterday, though.
Did anyone else hear a sort of rhythmic thrumming?
I wasn't sure if it was just over by us.

[ Now that someone's—somefuckinghow—popped up with a video, he's less concerned about sounding insane when he says: ] they pretty well leveled the forest se of the cabin. for miles.

they were up in the trees. just kept coming.

I am glad to hear that you've had no further trouble. I do not recall a sound, but there have been several animal attacks at the village so I may have missed it.

[personal profile] meadqueen 2023-10-16 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
No. Well, yes we encountered boars, but nothing too severe. Those large crabs you were seeing near the fishing area were gathering somewhere southeast of us two days ago. I saw them tear a boar apart.

We were lucky that the people here only incurred minor injuries.

And I assume you haven't heard, but last night Maddy disappeared as Zam did.

I heard it as well. Early in the morning a couple days ago at camp, northeast from the airfield.
Immediately afterward hundreds of crabs began to rise out of the ground all around us.
Seemed disoriented.
Luckily we were able to get away before they swarmed us.

[ K includes a low-res monochromatic video file of the event in question, most of which was shot while quickly moving in the opposite direction from the growing mass of crabs. ]

Glad to hear you two are doing okay.
Making bridges like that at each river is something I've wanted to do to help people cross easier.
Unfortunately I currently lack adequate tools. But it's a good idea.

[personal profile] obeir 2023-10-16 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
The sound must've agitated them. Or summoned them?

[ Because it definitely felt more like they were... called, somehow. Deliberately. ]

It doesn't seem like normal animal behaviour.
Or at least I've never witnessed anything like it before.

Yes. Between the rumbling and the initial sensation of the ground beneath us roiling, I thought it might be an earthquake. But it was all crabs. Some also came out of the trees.

I'm assuming this means you didn't pick up on the meaning of the "thrumming", then.
timaeus: (pic#16562564)

[personal profile] timaeus 2023-10-16 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe it was harder to discern anything more distinct than the thrumming as far away as you were.
But it sounded like the Pacair's language.
Somehow loud enough that you were hearing it all the way on the opposite end of the fucking island, but nevertheless, humming and clicking.

I see you already heard about the crabpocalypse. That's probably what you heard. It was wild as hell. There were probably hundreds of them just where we were, heading towards the sea, maybe? They didn't stick around anywhere so I'm not sure yet what happened to them.

Glad you weren't in their path, though.

We didn't really see them until they were right on us. No idea how we could have missed all these damn crabs congregating but who knows? This place is wild as hell.

I wonder if they were all headed to the same place and that's why you didn't see any where you were. Not that that's less weird.
