I’m southwest of the mountains, near the shore. There's an abandoned village here.

A central square, strangely paved, surrounded by several metal longhouses and an odd tower at one end. It's been abandoned for quite some time.

[ Rust's voice is pitched low, harsh from exertion. The Texas drawl mellows it some. ] Medical supplies? Communications?

I'm not yet certain. I arrived last night after dark and the disrepair is severe. I will let you know what I find.

[There’s a long pause, and then she speaks again, uncertain]

Can you tell—the people who were there, they leave in a hurry? Anything out in the open, half-finished like?

Ah... [ Shit. ] Yeah, kinda. It'd be bigger, might even have its own room. You got a word for the thing we're talking on?

It's difficult to say. Things are tossed about, but there are drifts of sand and plants everywhere so it could be natural. No furniture remains in the main area of the longhouse I stayed in last night, which might suggest an orderly departure, but might also suggest a fire.

[She considers the next question]

I don't even have a name for the material from which it's constructed. We have nothing like this.

That's helpful. [ One of those bland assurances trotted out during almost every interview. In this case it's true. ] Guess the state of the medical supplies'll give us a hint.

Plastic. It's shit. [ Says the man currently storing all his water in a plastic bag. Utterly devoid of humor: ] We call this a walkie-talkie.

Look for, ah, buttons and dials. Cords coated in plastic. But be careful—even if it's not working this equipment can throw sparks. Keep clear of exposed wire.

A what? I don't know.

It looks something like a watch tower - it's tall and there are large windows at the top. There’s a pole on the roof that might have been for a banner, but it's difficult to say from the ground.

Are there signs around, maybe? Like street signs? If it's some sort of settlement, maybe that could give you an idea of where we are. Depending on the language on the signs.

Street signs... [the only thing she can think of is milestones]

I'm not sure. When I arrived last night, it was dark. Now that the visibility is better, I'm going to search the area - I'll let you know if I come across any signs or documents.

I was hoping to find a well here but these stones are everywhere.

You know, if you're going to be there for a while, I'm happy to try to meet up. I can't promise anything yet. I've got two traveling companions with me, and I'm not sure where they'll want to go next. But maybe a pair of modern eyes will help you identify some of what you're seeing.

I think I can manage. It's tall, but there's a crumbling ladder system on the outside that I can use for leverage.

You've encountered others in person?

Someone else mentioned there being potential previous waves of kidnapping victims. Maybe they were able to establish some sort of settlement before something else went wrong.

Is the tower a watchtower?

I think so. There are large windows at the top.

The staircase inside is badly broken. It won't be easy to get up there.

Besides, I slept here last night. If someone wanted to kill me for trespassing, I’d be dead.
